Ambien Overview
Ambien, or its generic name Zolpidem, is a drug that is used to treat insomnia. It is a sedative-hypnotic drug, which causes people to sleep faster by reducing the activity of the brain. Ambien is not a benzodiazepine drug even though it acts on the GABA receptors in very much the same way and has a sedating and sleeping effect.
Usage and Dosage
Typically, Ambien is administered in 5mg or 10mg short-term doses—no more than 7 to 10 days. Administer it at bedtime on an empty stomach, and be prepared to sleep 7–8 hours straight. It is not to be used for night awakenings except in extended-release form.
Side Effects and Risks
While helpful, Ambien has side effects such as dizziness, headache, daytime sleepiness, or even abnormal behavior such as sleepwalking or driving while asleep. Chronic use can lead to dependence or tolerance, which diminishes its efficacy in the long term and makes it difficult to stop using it.
Precautions and Warnings
